When we brought her to the ER they discovered she had a UTI They sent her home on an antibiotic and visited with her primary doctor the following day. Then followed a lot of testing. VCUG and renal ultrasound. Every 6mos for the first 2 years she had the tests done and once every year after that. Going through the emotions of just the xrays were awful. I think, very traumatizing for a little girl. The VCUG is when they put a catheter in and watch where the dye is flowing through. Watching your child kick and scream and having 3 or 4 nurses hold u down to get the test done was very disturbing to see. My daughter is now 7 and was just taken off her antibiotic (bactrim) in May that she had been on since 3mos. old. It only took 2 months for her to get a UTI and is now back on the medicine again. This time her symtoms were pretty severe. Fever, vomiting, bed wetting, diarrhea, and bladder incontinance. She was urosepsis. Finally now after 7 years of waiting for her to grow out of it she will have the surgery. There has been no change in her reflux. I had requested the surgury prior to her getting sick in May and the Dr. wanted to wait to see what would happen for the possibility of no surgury. Big mistake. If u know your child is sick and your dr. doesn’t want to listen to your opinion, keep fighting it. You know your child better than they do. There is no need to struggle with VUR if there is a solution to the problem. August 2010
