lymph node removal and lymphedema

I was first diagnosed in April 2006 and knew little about breast cancer I wished that I had done more research before allowing the surgeon (who was very experienced) to do an SLNB and an axilliary biopsy. My nodes were all negative and there were no need for him to do both. Now I suffer from lymphedema that could have been avoided. He also left positive margins and cancer reocurred during chemotherapy. I had to have a mastectomy and further chemotherapy within a year. Always research and ask lots of questions. If the doctor refuses to answer, seek another doctor.
