Colon Resection

Greetings, I am a 40 year old male and had to have part of my colon removed due to a burst appendix. After the surgery, I was stiff and sore for weeks. The incision got infected and needed drained. I had drainage for 5 weeks. Later there was problems with stool coming out of my incision. A fistula formed between my large intestine and my skin near the incision. ( possibly from the infection, causing the colon to stick to my skin and heal to the skin.) This was a concern for me and my doctor. A second operation was performed to correct the problem with the fistula. ( note: the first surgery was an emergency surgery and I was not prepared with a colon cleaning and infection was inside my abdomen. ) The second surgery the colon was clean with a laxative the day before surgery.

After the second surgery, another longer section of colon was removed. A few days later, I had problems keeping fluids down. The cure was simple, take anti-acid tablets. Stomach acid was causing an upset stomach. Then I could progress to solid foods with in a day. My stool would not get solid until I started to eat yogart, bananas, and apple sauce. I stayed away from anything that would irritate the bowel, namely Nuts, Caffeine, anything with a shell, and seeds. Now 12 weeks from the first surgery eveything is healing up great. No signs of infection can be found. Best advice is to keep in contact with the doctor when you start having problems. Be persistent and calm went talking to your doctor. This can save your life.
