To quickly access health information from your website's browser, download My experience with open bowel resection I went to our local hospital in June 2008 for a routine colonoscopy. My GP recommended the procedure because I have a family history of colorectal cancer and a personal history of colon polyps. (My mother was diagnosed and operated on for colorectal cancer in 2004, and one of my aunts (her sister) died of it in 1995. During the colonoscopy, the MD performing the procedure discovered a polyp that was too large to be removed in the normal fashion. So, he scheduled me for an immediate bowel resection, which I had that afternoon. I spent five days in the hospital. During the course of my stay, I had very little pain except for the postop period. I was able to have a light diet about two days postop. After I left the hospital, I was able to resume normal activities — light housework (no heavy lifting, of course), cooking, and driving. As long as I didn’t exert myself too much, I did OK. The stitches came out 12 days postop, and I returned to work three weeks later. Barbara, I’m sorry that you were having problems. Comments
