My brush with cancer

I am a 54 year old female and have suffered over 25 years with chronic diarrhea. I have been the poster girl for Imodium. I finally got to the point that eating was not worth the problems. I couldn’t have regular checkups because I had no insurance. I happened to luck up on a double blind IBS study and the gastroenterologist performed a colonoscopy for free. He found polyps and two large masses….pre-cancerous masses. He insisted that I see a colorectal surgeon at UAMS in Little Rock, AR.

I had colon resection on 10/20/08 and a colostomy was put in place. I had the colostomy reversed 12/2/08 and I’m just working out the kinks with my colon functions but there is a great improvement. I’m just tryng to get use to “normal” bowel functions….but life is definitely getting better.

On of the masses did have a spot of cancer but it was all removed and I won’t have to have any treatments….just routine checkups.

It’s important to catch colon cancer in the early stages…..I took eight weeks out of my life to save my life…in the grand scheme of things, I win!!!!!!
