Rectal abscess leading to fistula
by: Y.G. on Tue, Dec 22 2009

I had a rectal abscess which was drained with a puncture under local anesthesia It was a very painful experience. Then, a fistula formed. I understand the probability of a fistula forming after rectal abscess is 50%. My proctologist recommended surgery, but pointed out it could wait, and I waited, for about a year, and finally decided to go through it. The surgery itself was a breeze under general anesthesia The first day after surgery was also OK. But after my first bowel movement, the pain and blood started to increase. I also feel the area around anus swollen a bit. I drink prune juice to avoid constipation and take sitz baths. It is the 5th day after surgery and I do not feel like I am recovering. I will see the doctor in two days.

By the way, anyone who is considering a surgery in the rectal area should get a Japanese style toilet seat (bidet) or a bidet attachment. The area gets sensitive and a washer is far superior than toilet paper, both considering friction due to paper and better hygiene with water.
