Hemorrhoidectomy

I am a 60 year-old male. I have hemorrhoid since 30 years ago after I had been a teacher in high school. Initialy, the symptoms of bleeding and itching sensation of anus occurred only after constipation. I had the habit of constipation with once every 3-4 day since I was a student. Both My father and uncle had hemorrhoids and received several times of surgery. The painful experience of them made me fear about hemorrhoid surgery. My father has the habit of regular enema for his chronic constipation and he has incontinence after his 3rd hemorrhoidectomy. I used to use laxative and enema to relieve constipation. But the hemorrhoid still became severe because I had to stand and sit for long time. Several times even during I was in the class, I could not control my sphincter because of severe hemorrhoids. In fact, many of my friends and other teachers also suffered from these problems. We had tried several non-surgical ways to relieve but most were not satisified. I visited a proctologist, finally because my uncle was diagnosed with rectal cancer and after operation, he used a colostomy I was afraid of getting rectal cancer. After I stated my condition, the doctor gave me a digital rectal examination, although I had years of hemorrhoids, I never received rectal examination until I was 50 years old. The examination was embarrassed and painful. I was asked in lithotomy position with naked on the special examination table. The doctor asked me to starin as I was constipated. In fact, my hemorrhoids were grade 4 with persisting prolapse. The doctor wanted me to receive operation to treat the hemorrhoids. In addition, he would check my colon with colonsocopy before surgery. I was admitted one day before surgery and was enema and took laxatives to clean my colon. The colonscopy was a terrible experience. I had two polyps in my upper rectum and was excised. After colonoscopy, the hemorrhoid operation took about 2 hours with local anesthesia only. Difficult urination happened because I also had prostate enlargement and I was catheterization. The most discomfort occurred two days after operation during my bowel movement. I return to class after one month of rest. Today, 2 years after my hemorrhoidectomy, the disease recurred with mild prolapse and bleeding because I could not change my work and bowel habit. But I could relieve the discomfort by sitz bath and local treatment. I think it is difficult to get rid of my hemorrhoids until I am retired.

Hi, I am having similar difficulties myself, but I learned that sitz bahts do not help to really heal the problem - at best, they ease the pain. I s...Read
